This past weekend, the San Paolo District was alive with the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked pizza as it hosted the first edition of the Roma Pizza Contest. An enthusiastic crowd of food lovers, families, and connoisseurs gathered to witness the ultimate pizza showdown among master pizzaioli. The event, which concluded on Sunday afternoon, featured intense competition across three categories of dough, judged by the esteemed Daniele Di Grazia, a renowned instructor at the Gambero Rosso Academy.

The Roma Pizza Contest aimed to highlight the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Rome’s pizza scene. “Rome boasts pizzerias that have been open for over thirty years, offering outstanding doughs, excellent fried foods, and top-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Our goal was to bring attention to these hidden gems.”
Masterclasses and Workshops
The event wasn’t just for pizza tasting; it also featured educational sessions for industry professionals and families alike. The acclaimed master pizzaiolo, Pino Arletto, led a masterclass on Roman-style pizza alla pala.
Pizza Contest Winners
The competition saw incredible talent and creativity, with the following pizzaioli emerging victorious:
- Sumon Bhuiyan (In Pizza Veritas): Bhuiyan impressed the judges with his traditional tonda pizza featuring eggplant parmigiana and a pizza alla pala topped with mortadella, stracciatella, and pistachio crumbs. His pizzas were celebrated for their crispiness.
- Simone Di Pietro (Gli Sfiziosi): Di Pietro’s pizza in teglia, “La Sfiziosa,” featuring zucchini flowers, cherry tomatoes, and porcini mushrooms, won accolades for its dough and presentation.
- Antonio Serrante (La Teglia): Serrante delighted the judges with a classic Neapolitan margherita and an inventive pizza in teglia, “La Profumata,” which included cherry tomatoes, fior di latte, and a flavorful pesto made with parsley, basil, garlic, and chili pepper.
